Local Area Information

The countryside in which the cottages are set is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and facing south from the field immediately behind the cottages, the sea can be seen in an arc across farmland, from the Dart estuary at Dartmouth to Start Point, on which the light house (which can be visited) is visible flashing after dark.  On a clear night, the sky is incredible.

The cottages are part of a small medieval hamlet of Swannaton comprising 6 houses including Higher Swannaton Farm in which the cottages are located.  The farm has both sheep and cattle on the fields at different times of the year and visitors need to be careful approaching the latter, since they are both large and inquisitive.  However, when animals are not present, you are free to walk over the fields, take in the views and enjoy the peace.

There are walks into Dartmouth, across the valley to Little Dartmouth, Stoke Fleming and the coastal footpaths.  A number of wide beaches, including Blackpool Sands and  Slapton Beach, and small, rocky coves are nearby.

Dartmouth has lots to offer, including interesting shops, the Flavel arts centre, leisure centre with gym and indoor pool and a popular outdoor pool. There are over 25 high quality restaurants and pubs serving food in Dartmouth, in addition to two (excellent) fish and chip shops, good coffee shops, several pasty shops and bakers. At weekends and peak periods, you need to book restaurants and pubs well in advance.

Links to some of our favourite places to eat are below. We try to keep these up to date but obviously ownership and chefs change, so please look at reviews to get the latest updates.
